WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?

Otoplasty refers to an ear surgery that refines the ears’ shape, size, or projection.1 Dr. Tal Roudner’s goal when performing ear surgery in Miami is to balance the ears with the features of his patient’s face.

BENEFITS OF OTOPLASTY

Whether a patient’s ears have poor shape or structure as genetic malformation or as the result of a traumatic injury, Dr. Tal Roudner can help harmonize a patient’s ear(s) with his/her facial features. He can offer his patients a more cohesive look when he performs their ear surgery. Other benefits include:

  • Increased self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Balance the ears in proportion to the face
  • Reduce the size of overly large ears
  • Improve the ear shape
  • Repair torn earlobes

CANDIDATES FOR OTOPLASTY

Good candidates for otoplasty surgery are typically individuals who are unhappy with the structure, shape, or projection of their ears. In addition, ear surgery can treat many different deformities that are a consequence of birth defects (congenital) such as the absence of the external ear (anotia), small ears (microtia), large ears (macrotia), and trauma. Ear deformities that are present at birth occasionally overlap with syndromes that involve other facial and body malformations such as Hemifacial microsomia, Treacher Collins Syndrome conditions, and more. In addition to correcting the ear deformities the facial and body deformities are corrected at different stages appropriately.

THE OTOPLASTY PROCEDURE

Otoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation and takes roughly two hours. The otoplasty technique Dr. Roudner uses can vary patient-to-patient depending on the type of correction required. In general, otoplasty incisions are within the inner creases of the ears or the backs of the ears. Once the appropriate incisions have been made, Dr. Roudner will remove any excess skin and ear cartilage, and then fold the remaining cartilage into the ideal position. Dr. Roudner will finish the surgery by securing the ear in its new position with internal sutures and closing the incisions.

OTOPLASTY RECOVERY & RESULTS

Following your otoplasty procedure, Dr. Roudner will cover your ears in bandages to protect the incision and support the ears as they heal. It’s common to experience some itching and discomfort however pain medication will be provided to ensure your comfort during the healing process.

It’s important to avoid placing any pressure on your ears and sleep on your back. Dr. Roudner will see you for a follow-up visit several days after your surgery to remove your bandages and check your healing progress. Once the bandages have been removed you’ll see a visible improvement in the appearance of your ears however they will be red and swollen. You will wear a compression headband for several weeks at night to protect your ears and help reduce swelling. The total recovery time is approximately eight weeks to heal after ear correction surgery.

FAQS ABOUT OTOPLASTY

Does otoplasty have any risks?
