What Is Botox?

The FDA has approved Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) as a cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of frown lines in people between the ages of 18 and 65 years old. Botulinum toxin products are neuromodulators used to treat facial wrinkles. These medications work by blocking the transmission of signals from the nerves to weaken or temporarily paralyze muscle contractions.1 While the muscles are weakened or paralyzed the facial wrinkles are softened or completely eliminated. As the neuromodulator wears off, the muscle gradually regains its activity.

Dr. Roudner’s goal is to restore a youthful appearance by softening or eliminating facial wrinkles while maintaining some facial expressions. Dr. Roudner may perform a series of injections with the neuromodulators in the appropriate anatomical locations and concentrations to obtain that rejuvenated appearance.

Preparing For Botox

Before performing the treatment, Dr. Roudner will discuss the medication with you to make sure you understand what Botox can and can’t do. Dr. Roudner will also review your medications with you to determine if you are taking allergy medications, muscle relaxants, or sleeping aids. Some medications, including over-the-counter blood thinners such as aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen, can increase your risk of bleeding or bruising and should be avoided for at least two weeks prior to an injection of Botox. If you are taking any other medications that should be avoided, Dr. Roudner will let you know and will discuss with you whether they should be stopped. If you have any chronic respiratory conditions or muscular or neurological disorders you should let Dr. Roudner know prior to treatment as Botox may not be the right choice for you. Dr. Roudner will discuss other options for treating your lines and wrinkles including the use of facial fillers.

The Botox Procedure

Come to your appointment at our Miami office with a clean face that is free of makeup and lotions. Icing the area to be treated about 30 minutes prior to your injections can provide a numbing effect. Dr. Roudner can also apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area if you desire. Once you are comfortable and ready to proceed, Dr. Roudner will carefully inject the medication into the desired area. The length of time required to complete the treatment will depend on how large an area is being treated, but most treatments only take about 15 minutes.

Techniques Used during Botox Treatment

The procedure is performed with injections at specific anatomical areas where the functioning muscles are present while using very small thin needles (30-32 gauge) which minimize the discomfort associated with the injections.

Botox Anesthesia

Most people injected with a botulinum neurotoxin like Botox require no anesthesia or anesthetic. If a patient is extremely sensitive or anxious a topical anesthetic may be applied to the area to be injected one hour prior to the procedure.

Length of time for Botox

The procedure takes anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes depending on how many areas are injected.

Botox Recovery

Patients will notice slight swelling and redness at the injection sites that may last a few hours to a day, rarely some discomfort may be associated with the injections that may last a few days. Icing the area may be helpful to speed up recovery and reduce swelling. Avoid any strenuous activities on the day of the treatment (gym, running, etc.), as sweating may cause the loss of the neuromodulator. The use of the treated muscles for a few hours after the treatment may increase the uptake of the neuromodulation.

Botox Results

You should begin to notice a difference in the appearance of your lines and wrinkles within about one to three days, and the full effect will be noticeable after about 10 days. In most patients, the effects created by Botox should last about three to four months. After this time, you can return to our Miami office for another treatment. If you have been using Botox regularly for at least two years, you may notice that the effect may last up to six months.
